Rare plant known
from only a few sites in the south of the Marche. A.J.B.
Brilli-Cattarini recorded it for Montalto Marche (AP) in 1965, M.
dell'Ascensione (AP) in 1973 and the Sarnano area (MC) 1981. Rodolfo
Crescentini also found it near Gimigliano (AP) in 1994. Giovanni
Battista Piccinini found it near Balzetto di Montegallo (AP) in
2008 (see photos). Domenico Matteucci
included it in his list of species found on M. Nerone (PU) in
1893. This might well be a mistake for Orchis simia,
which as a matter of fact he omits from his list.
A single
individual of the species was found in a mountain meadow on
Monte Cilio (PU) near Monte Catria on 18 May 2013. This would be
the first certain find of O. italica in the
province Pesaro-Urbino, and the most northern occurrence of the
species on the Adriatic.
The last two pictures here
are of specimens photographed in Puglia.
